Arts and culture in Perth

Perth is alive with a spectacular mix of music, theatre, comedy, dance and visual art. This rich tapestry of cultural experiences is on offer throughout the year across the region.

Music lovers are in for a treat, with plenty of live music on offer especially in cultural hotspots like Perth, Northbridge, Subiaco and Fremantle. You'll find music ranging from rock bands at trendy pubs to chilled-out jazz floating from wine bars and restaurants. Perth is also emerging as a comedy capital, with hilarious local and international acts regularly on offer at special comedy clubs or pubs, especially in Northbridge.

Micro Galleries - Sky & Garden

Located within Micro Galleries at the Art Gallery of WA, the second instalment of the Wesfarmers Collection photographic display focuses on place, tastes and traditions from iconic Australian artists.

In May 2016, the Art Gallery of Western Australia opened two new display spaces, Garden Gallery and Sky Gallery. In the second part of the year, the micro galleries will explore the medium of photography with works from iconic Australian artists. This focuses on the idea of landscape and what contemporary explorations of the theme can show us about our place, tastes and traditions.

Antipodean trees and intense light that among other elements have come to define the 'iconic Australian landscape' can be found in the paintings of Eugene von Guerard, Arthur Streeton and Frederick McCubbin, whose works are currently on view in our Centenary Galleries. Indeed, the European, and by extension, Australian, landscape tradition has been seeped in symbolism, metaphor and philosophy of the day.

The works on display from the Wesfarmers Collection attest to the contemporary manifestations and exploration of this theme through a variety of media, scale and depth of focus.
